Storm Summary and Projection:
Hurricane Summary POSTED: August 29, 2015 9:03 p.m. Erika Weakens to a Tropical Rainstorm Tropical Storm Erika weakened Saturday morning to a tropical rainstorm just off the coast of Cuba. Erika will track through Cuba tonight before moving into the Florida Straits Sunday morning. Despite the weakening, flooding rain will move into Florida Sunday into Monday. Heavy rainfall of 2-4 inches will fall across eastern and central Cuba with some 4- to 8-inch amounts possible in the highest terrain. Although the rain will be beneficial due to the long-term drought in this region, there can be life-threatening flash flooding and mudslides. Heavy rain will spread north across south Florida on Sunday into Monday where several inches are likely and flooding is possible. Tropical Rainstorm Erika should track to the northwest across the Florida Keys on Sunday night and then slow down as it tracks northward in the eastern Gulf of Mexico, just west of Florida on Tuesday. This should spread heavy rain to the north across the peninsula, especially across the western half. A large tropical wave about halfway between the Lesser Antilles and Africa is causing numerous showers and some thunderstorms. It is moving into an area of unfavorable wind shear, so any development will be slow. By AccuWeather Meteorologists Steve Travis and Andy Mussoline
